THE Z-ARTS THEATRE – 335 STRETFORD ROAD – HULME – MANCHESTER – M15 5ZA

In 2016, South Manchester AOS moved from the RNCM studio space to the larger Z-ARTS Theatre.

The Z-Arts was formed in 2000 with a priority on providing participatory creative activity. If you’re more of a watcher than a doer, then their theatre programme has shows to suit all ages.

Why not pop in and see what they’ve got to offer? Have a coffee in their café and have a browse?

Z-Arts creates an artistic hub in their large building with twelve public rooms including the 230 seat theatre, gallery, fully equipped dance studio, music studio, café, rehearsal and workshop rooms.

The building itself was erected in 1911 as a Congregational Church and Institute, Z-Arts occupies one of the oldest buildings in Hulme and has had a fascinating history, including housing for the Boys Brigade, refuge in the Blitz, rehearsal space for Pavarotti, exhibition space for Damien Hirst and much more.

After the Second World War bombings, the Church authorities rented out the building to other organisations. The Halle Orchestra and Choir arrived in 1964 followed by the Northern Ballet Theatre in 1969. Both organisations remained until 1980s.

In April 2012 the building was officially rebranded as Z-Arts as it redefined it’s mission to help inspire and provide creative opportunities for people across Manchester and the Northwest.

The Stretford Road area of Hulme has undergone extensive regeneration in recent years yet this marvellous building stands proud in the community.
